Step 1: Remove QuickBooks

  • Open the Control Panel.

  • Choose Programs and Features over Uninstall a Program. 

  • From the list of programs, find and select the version of QuickBooks Desktop you want to remove.

  • Uninstall QuickBooks again.

  • Locate and open the folder containing your QuickBooks company files, usually named QuickBooks, found in one of the following locations:

  • Year of C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks

  • C:\Users\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooks (year) (the current user)

  • Year of C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks

  • For 64-bit versions: C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks (year)

  • Right-click on the folder and select Rename.

  • The folder name should have the old one appended at the end. This prevents QuickBooks from accessing it during reinstallation.

If you encounter an access error message when attempting to rename the folder:

  • Right-click on the Windows Task Bar and select Task Manager to access it.

  • Go to the Processes tab.

  • Click on the Name column heading to sort the list alphabetically.

  • Locate and select the processes QBDBMgrN.exe, QBDBMgr.exe, QBCFMonitorService.exe, and Qbw32.exe.

  • For each selected process, click on End Process.
