7 Simple and effective steps to design kitchen interiors

1. Choose the style:

Research about the style and decide a theme that works best with style. For instance, Scandinavian style works best for kitchen interiors. This style unveils simple life style that illustrates the characteristics of natural elements, ample space design, more natural light, playful color and wooden accents. This style also provides timeless designs and often employs modern or minimalist design vibes.

When it comes to kitchen design, creating Scandinavian-inspired cooking space often includes layering on accents of warm wood in the form of cabinetry and flooring, paint colors in pale hues and a minimalist yet textured backsplash. Sleek stools and scaled back kitchen ware complete this timeless design look. But these rules are also meant to break and design your own way of living interiors.

2. Space planning layout for quick reference:

Note down the dimensions of the space and placement of the windows and doors. Also consider the electrical points and structural elements like beams and wall before planning the space to avoid any inconvenience later. Various available kitchen layouts are one wall, L-shape, U-shape, parallel and island kitchen. You can make choice of your own based on the space constraints. Plan for arrangement of wall and base cabinets, appliances, accessories based on standard depth, width and height. Make a rough placement of furniture layout and chose the shape and size to match with the overall design.

3. Materials and finishes selection:

  • Cabinets: are designed as two entities such as carcass (inside cabinet) and shutters. Carcass is made up of MDF, laminate sheets, veneers, BWR for base unit carcass and plywood for wall unit carcass with matte and glossy finish. Shutters, end panels and fillers are made of MDF with available high glossy, matte, laminate, lacquered, acrylic and membrane finishes. For glass shutters apply UV glass for high protection. Choose the colors according to the style and theme. Most commonly used carcass material color is frosty white and shutter material colors are neutrals and pastel colors of blue, green and yellow for the Scandinavian style.
  • Flooring: Scandinavian style follows chevrons, horizontal line, plain, herringbone, walnut and seamless texture patterned wooden flooring in neutral and warm color tones. Chessboard, morocco, rhombus and mini square tile patterns.
  • Counter top: granites, marbles, quartz and concrete.
  • Backsplash tiles: it can be designed in various forms such as geometric or Moroccan pattern tiles, shutter material color, as an extension of countertop material, retro or vintage touch and hexagonal or seamless brick texture.
  • Window and door frames can be camouflaged with wall color or wall cabinet color to make it look more natural.

4. Color palette and designs:

Once the required materials are finalized, color palette selection is easy. Designs and colors are chosen to match the materials with other wall designs. Wall papers, arts, wall panels and cabinet paneling are designed at this stage.

5. Furniture and furnishings:

Refer furniture layout from the second step. Consider ergonomically designed furniture which maintains proper size and dimensions to promote health and well being while using them. Ergonomics includes size and height of the furniture set which is designed according to the human activities and dimensions. Furniture furnishings must be eco-friendly and safe to use, with easy maintenance.  Flooring furnishing like rug must be chosen according to the style to match with the patterns or designs of the style and to blend easily with the flooring material.

6. Appliances:

Appliances like fridge, hob, chimney, oven, toaster and sink follow standard dimensions. Handles such as knobs, round or square arch type knobs, professional handles, long handles comes with metal or stainless steel finishes.

7. Lighting:

Lighting design mainly focus on the lighting type (such as pendant lights, recessed and general light), materials (with metal, steel, chrome and wood finishes), geometry (shape and size) and placement of the lighting. Pendant lights and chandeliers are commonly used over the island kitchen cabinet or dining table. Cabinet lighting is used below the wall cabinets and it enhances the beauty of backsplash tiles and safe while doing kitchen work.
