So far,  we have discussed about some elements that make up our planet. These elements support the survival of all living things. Human beings have further acquired ways to use the earth's resources by establishing industries to make life more comfortable. Let us now learn about these Industries in detail.

The world's major industries are the:-

  • Iron and Steel 
  • Cotton Textile 
  • The Information Technology 
  • Sugar 
  • Automobile 
  • Shipbuilding 
  • Fishing Industries 

Iron and Steel Industry :- Steel is a major industry for all the countries. It is used as raw material for almost all other industries. 

Major steel industries are located in countries like Germany, USA, India, Japan, China, Brazil and Russia. 

Raw material such as iron ore, coal and limestone, together with labour, capital, location and other infrastructure are important inputs for this Industry. 

Cotton Textile Industry :-The cotton textile industry is one of the oldest among all manufacturing activities. The sign of the existence of cotton textile industry can be observed in all the early civilisations like Indus valley, Egyptian, Vedic, Roman, etc. 

At present, the major textile industries are concentrated in India, USA and China. 

Information Technology :- This Industry deals in the storage, processing and distribution of information. Today this Industry is global. 

The major hub of the IT industry in the world are the Silicone Valley in California, USA and Bengaluru - the silicone Valley of India. 

Suger Industry :- Sugarcane is an important commercial crop worldwide and also one of the principal source for sugar, ethanol and jaggery globally. Its by-product are also used  as a fodder to feed livestock in many countries. 

Major Sugarcane producers in the world are the USA, Indonesia, Brazil, India, Colombia, Pakistan, Mexico, China and Thailand. 

Automobile Industry :- The world's automobile industry made over SIXTY SIX Million cars, vans, trucks and buses. These vehicles are essential to the working of the global economy and to the well being of the world's citizens. If vehicle manufacturing was a country it would be the SIXTH largest economy in the world. 

Some of the major automobile producing countries are China, USA, Japan, Germany, Korea, Spain, India, Brazil and Canada. 

Shipbuilding Industry :- Shipbuilding is the construction of water vessels such as ships, ocean liners, tankers, etc. These Industries are usually located in harbours that have large spaces. The practice of Shipbuilding began as early as the ancient civilisations where people used the river for transportation and communication. After the Second World War, the industry grew larger and gained it's prominence. 

The world's largest Shipbuilding industry is located in China, which is followed by Japan and South Korea. Other important countries include Germany, India, France, USA, Netherlands, Brazil, Ukraine and Sweden. 

Fishing Industry :- Any industry or activity where fish or fish products are gathered, processed, presented, stored, transported, marketing or sold is termed as a fishing industry. The aim of this commercial activity is to deliver fish and other seafood products for human consumption or to provide input factors for other industrial processes. Directly or indirectly, fisheries or aquaculture are necessary for the livelihood of over 500 million people in the developing countries. 

China, Japan, Peru, USA, India, Thailand, Norway, Indonesia, Russia and Iceland are the major fish producing countries in the world.
