Why Sikhs wear '5 Kakkars'?

Sikhism is the world's 5th largest religion. Sikhism is founded by the first guru, 'Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji'. But the custom of wearing 5 Kakkars after the 'Amrit sanchaar' is started by the 10th guru 'Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji'. But before this process, Amrit was given in the form of 'Charan amrit'.

In this article, we will discuss the following points:-

  • What is 'Amrit sanchaar'?
  • Meaning of the '5 Kakkars'.
  • Why only '5 Kakkars'?
  • Why so many Sikhs neglect this?

1.What is 'Amrit sanchaar'?

On the 13 th April, 1699 Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the Khalsa panth by giving them amrit and 5 Kakkars. This amrit is prepared in an iron bowl and contains sugar crystals. They stir the double edged dword(khanda) while chanting the bani.

2.Meaning of the '5 Kakkars':-

Guru Gobind Ji established Khalsa by giving them 5 Kakkars. Khalsa is tyaar-bar-tyaar means always ready for anything.

  1. Kesh(uncut hairs)
  2. Kangha(wooden comb)
  3. Kara(an iron bracelet)
  4. Kirpan(a small dagger)
  5. Kachera(white underwear)

1.Kesh(uncut hairs):-

This is the first and most important kakkar. According to the Sikh code of conduct, a Sikh should not cut his hairs from birth from any part of their body. In the dasam granth bani, guru says:-

"pargat bhaye roop munwar ko,

Jata joot nau sikh pooran"

Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the image of satyuga saints in kali yuga. He gave his Khalsa the image of saints. Both keep long hairs and don't cut from any part of their body. Without the hairs, one can't attain siddhi or can't do real meditation. Hairs are a beauty factor for women and in men, it shows dominance.

2.Kangha(wooden comb):-

For combing their hairs, Sikhs use a wooden comb. It keeps their hairs clean and it also helps in massaging the scalp. It increases blood circulation. Whereas the plastic comb carries a positive charge, causes static and frizz. Also gives a lot of hair problems.

3. Kara(an iron bracelet):-

Every Sikh wears an iron bracelet. It is the symbol of the guru. It plays a very important role. It can be used as a weapon and regular jingling of it increases blood circulation. It increases iron in the body. It protects the Sikh from negative vibes.

4. Kirpan(a small dagger):-

Sikhs always wear a small dagger for the protection. Guru says,

"shastran ke adheen hai raaj,

Jo na dhare tis bidre kaaj"

Or

"Bina shastar kesang narang bhed jano,

Geh kaan than ko kithai lai sidhano

Eh mor agya suno sikh pyare,

Bina shastar kesang na devo didare"

The rule can be achieved only by weapons. If one is not carrying weapons, he is deteriorating his life. Here, weapons are used for self-protectionn.

Without weapons, one is like a sheep. Take him anywhere with his ear. Guru said that this is my order to carry weapons to fight for justice. Otherwise, I will not give my blessings to you.

5.Kacherra(white underwear):-

They wear underwear about 1.85 meters long. Today, everyone wears underwear in different forms. It started because of the seductive nature of the human. Sikhs bathe by wearing their underwears.

3.Why only 5 Kakkars?

Sikhs believe that our body is made up of five sources, we have five senses and 5 kosh. We need 5 Kakkars to control them. These 5 Kakkars helps in fighting both internal and external battles.

4. Why large no. of sikhs ignore 5 Kakkars?

Today, sikhs are indulging in fashion. They are neglecting the sikh code of conduct. These sikhs are 'manmukhs'. They disrespect the guru and follow their own rules. They all will go to hell.

"rehat bina na sikh kahave"

Without the sikh code of conduct, one is not a sikh and a true Khalsa.
