Why is Magneto so difficult to defeat in Marvel universe?

Simple- look at his powers.

Obviously, as his name suggests (and as many will already be aware of), he has the primary ability of magnetokinesis/magnetism, but that also expands, literally, across the entire electromagnetic spectrum.

It’s also pretty common knowledge and so much so that even those with only a passing knowledge of the character will know he’s very often considered one of the most powerful beings on Earth period and more so when it’s narrowed down to supervillains or, even more so, mutant supervillains.

An easy thing to bring to attention would be how most weapons tend to contain some metal inside them, so, obviously, it is easy for Magneto to remove those weapons.

There’s also his magnetic force fields, which have been shown capable of withstanding, y’know, nuclear detonations as well as heats hotter than the sun.

But what some people fail to realize is the actual scope of his control.

One of the more obvious examples was when he was literally interacting with the planet Earth itself and threatening to (and very well could have) flip the magnetic poles to opposite ends during the Fatal Attractions storyline.

But I won’t go into detail on that one and focus instead on a couple of others.

There’s this example from the AvX: Vs. Issues focused on battles briefly seen during the larger Avengers vs. X-Men and gave them more attention/detail.

One of those was Iron Man vs. Magneto.

I’ll skip most of it as these show examples of the scope he has;

The first series of panels starts with Magneto’s narration boxes claiming, “I know the taste of that power. Jupiter. He’s siphoning energy from Jupiter’s magnetic field. Clever little human.” That shows the scope/range he has can actually “feel” Jupiter and, in turn, the magnetic field being siphoned.

The second panel begins, again, with Magneto’s narration boxes, and this time, they claim, “Somewhere in the depths of space, I felt an entire planet vanish in an instant. Consumed by the flames of the Phoenix.” It’s not made entirely clear which planet was destroyed by the Phoenix Force on its approach to Earth (in terms of distance, I mean), but it was certainly one that is outside our own solar system. And Magneto’s powers allowed him to sense it’s destruction almost instantly upon it occurring.

Needless to say, that’s quite a range.

Kitty and space bullet.

Another example of the range his powers give him involves Kitty Pryde and a giant space bullet… no. I’m not making that up.

Long story short, there was a story involving the X-Men going to an alien planet known as Breakworld. There was a prophecy that an Earth mutant would destroy the planet. That mutant turned out to be Colossus. As a defensive act, Breakworld launched a giant bullet at Earth, which would destroy it. Kitty Pryde ended up inside said bullet and used her powers to make it intangible to pass through the Earth. But, being a giant space bullet, it obviously kept traveling through space with Kitty permanently intangible inside it.

It was revealed that, at the time, Magneto was with the High Evolutionary in space when he noticed said bullet, and there’s this;

At the time, they were working on plans to try and return the X-Gene to the Earth after, following House of M, the Scarlet Witch had uttered her famous “No more mutants.” line. As Magneto’s narration boxes say there, “I memorized the unique tastes of the metals in her phantom body.”

The first image with Magneto suffering a nose bleed is him showing visible physical strains of his attempts to “lock on” to the giant space bullet and Kitty herself.

(The reason was he was trying to prove to Cyclops that he had turned over a new leaf and that he could be of use to the X-Men, so I figured returning Kitty would be a gesture of his intentions as, naturally, doubts were raised over them…)

Eventually, it came down to this;

Again, like the planet the Phoenix Force destroyed, its exact distance is unknown but saying “At minimum… a few light-years from Earth” absolutely wouldn’t be an exaggeration. And, of course, it was constantly in motion due to Kitty keeping it intangible, so it would have been (until Magneto’s intervention) traveling further away at a pretty considerable speed.

Yet Magneto was able to track it down across that massive distance and interact with it to return Kitty Pryde to Earth.

Not only that, but he was also shown to be interacting with those “unique tastes of the metals in her phantom body” to be able to safely remove her from the bullet and bring her back down to Earth and even revert her from her phased form into a solid form to touch her back down to Earth comfortably.

Quite frankly, no. I DON’T know how he managed to do that.

But the fact that he COULD do that..?

IT’S INSANE.

So those are a couple of solid examples to show just how powerful he truly is.
