The Arya was central Asian steppe pastoralists who arrived in India between roughly 2000 BCE and 1500 BCE and brought Indo-European languages to the subcontinent.
At its height, the Indus civilization extended over half a million square miles across the Indus river valley, and though it existed at the same time as the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Sumer, it far outlasted them. The first group to invade India were the Aryans, who came out of the north in about 1500 BC.
The Indo-Aryan peoples (or Indic peoples) are a diverse collection of ethnolinguistic groups speaking Indo-Aryan languages, a subgroup of the Indo-European language family. Indo-Aryan peoples are native to the northern Indian subcontinent and presently found all across South Asia, where they form the majority.

The Mughals ruled over a population in India that was two-thirds Hindu, and the earlier spiritual teachings of the Vedic tradition remained influential in Indian values and philosophy. The early Mughal empire was a tolerant place. Unlike the preceding civilizations, the Mughals controlled a vast area of India.
