What you didn't know about Job interview Qualification requirements

Job Interview

Have you ever looked at a certain job listing, spotted a particular job vacancy which to the best of your understanding you qualified for but... you decided against applying because of a particular job qualification requirement?

You are not alone. Many face the same issue whenever they come across job vacancies they feel they do qualify for. In reality, your potential employer usually would apply this tactic to just automatically filter applicants but does not necessarily mean that whoever actually gets shortlisted for a job interview will have met all the job qualification requirements.

Take for example the following scenario;

Qualifications and Work Experience:

  1. Must be a citizen
  2. First degree in the following fields: Public Administration, Environmental planning and management, Business Administration, Agriculture, Economics, Engineering or their equivalent.
  3. Master's Degree in any of the above or related field
  4. Strategic leadership development course lasting not less than 4 weeks from a recognized institution
  5. must have at least 10 years' experience in a senior management position in a reputable organization.
  6. Experience in managing and implementation of donor-funded projects
  7. must be a member of a professional body
  8. must be computer literate
  9. experience in resource mobilization will be an added advantage.

Looking at the above list of the job qualification requirements, one will easily feel discouraged from applying for this job since in one way or another there is a requirement he/she feels he does not meet.

But did you know that even the potential employers are never keen at what they include in the job qualification requirements list?

The potential employers are usually looking for a certain personality in the applicant and as long as one meets the level of the personality they are searching for, they will be okay to shortlist him for the interview and that's when they will make their final conclusion.

So, you have to ask yourself, do I possess the abilities and personality the potential employer is searching for? It is a matter of not assuming things. You just have to apply for that job you think you qualify for. It might turn out that you're the most capable among those who applied. Or better still, the potential employer may consider you later for a certain job position that would get available at a later date and be invited for the interview.

The thing is, never just disqualify yourself. Always try to send out your CV whenever you spot a job position you believe you do qualify for.
