What is the 5 ways to break into the video game industry

With an estimate of $ 336 billion, the video gaming industry is bigger than TV, movies, and music combined. And as the industry grows rapidly, there are many opportunities to work in this area. From game designers and software engineers who program games to graphic artists and electrical engineers who design game consoles, there are many careers in the video game industry.
These jobs pay between $ 55,000 and over $ 100,000 annually. But like the NBA itself, the road to the video gaming industry is fiercely competitive.
As a former graphics director at Texas A & M University's leading video gaming company and director of the Learning Interactive Visualization Experience (LIVE Lab), I know first-hand what it takes to get a job in the video gaming industry. Here are five tips for doing this:
1. Design your own game
When applying for a job or internship at a video game company, it is useful to show off the game you created or modified.
Fortunately, the underlying technology behind the game, the game engine, is free to use and you can create your own games. Unreal and Unity are two things I would love to try. You can also use free software such as
Houdini and Blender create video game assets such as buildings, characters, vehicles, and animations.
If you find it difficult to create a game from scratch, you can always use "mod" (short for "modify"). Existing games such as Portal2, Civilization, and Minecraft. This is a great place to start learning the basics of game design and asset creation.

Participating in Game Jam
Game Jam is a contest in which participants create new video games within a set time frame. Game jams are a great way to meet and collaborate with others on your game project and learn how to make games. Many jams feature representatives of video game companies. Representatives of these companies act as mentors, judges, and coaches. They can give you tips and tricks on how to get into the industry. They can also give you a pointer to work.
Game jams are usually short, about a day or two, but some can last for a week or more. You can participate in game jams individually or as a small team. Some game jams focus on specific topics such as health, protection, and science, providing resources for teachers and students to participate. B. A game for changing student challenges. Other game jams like Global Game Jam are open to everyone, including professionals. Some game jams are face-to-face, allowing you to meet directly with other game designers, artists, developers, industry mentors, and game companies such as Millennium.
3. Participating in Game Conventions
One of the largest conferences in the United States is the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, which has attracted more than 29,000 participants so far.
In Europe, Gamescom's annual conference in Cologne, Germany, attracted more than 370,000 participants. Several PAX conferences are held year-round in various locations throughout the United States. PAX began as the Penny Arcade Expo before it evolved into a complete conference and exhibition. At these conferences, participants can learn about new games, meet game industry experts, play games, and attend seminars and workshops on topics related to game design and development. Meetings like the
PAX East also provide indie developers with the opportunity to showcase their games and get feedback from the general public. Most conferences will be held directly in 2022 and will require attendance or exhibition fees. Ticket prices range from $ 50 to hundreds of dollars.
4. Take Game Design Courses
Many high schools, community colleges, and universities offer game design courses.
In addition to these courses, it will help you to take math, physics, arts, and technology courses in the upper grades if possible. Almost every carrier in the video gaming industry benefits from all these areas. Game designers looking to create balanced games need a solid foundation in math and statistics. To balance the game, designers need to use math and statistics to ensure that one game element, such as a particular character or strategy, does not overwhelm another.
Even if you don't think you're going to use math or art, it's very helpful to understand the basics of both and be able to talk to your colleagues on these topics.
5. Playaway
To create a great game, you need to be familiar with the games that are currently being played and have been successful in the past. In other words, you need to play games that you don't normally play or that you don't like. Not everyone likes every game. There are various types of games, from entertainment games to educational games, health games, and science games. Being able to take a critical look at your game to see which elements work well, which ones you can improve, and which ones you can use in your game can help you become a great game designer.
You can enter the gaming industry with a little work. It's also very rewarding. Imagine a game that helped teach players new knowledge, accelerate player healing, discover new proteins, and entertain players for hours.
