What Is Hematite? A Brief Discussion About That For Science Students

What is Hematite?

Hematite is a mineral material. Hematite is one of the most common materials. It is found on the earth. The scientific chemical formula of Hematite is Fe₂O₃.

In most cases, its color is black. If you make a list of the most abandoned materials in the world, which are not found on the earth easily. Hematite is one of these materials.

Hematite is an ore of

Hematite is an ore of Iron. Probably, It has 70% of Iron and 30% of Oxygen. It's an Iron Oxide with a chemical composition Fe₂O₃.

Hematite contains a higher percentage of Iron. For that, people can find iron easily from Hematite.

Where Hematite is found?

It is found in metamorphic rocks, igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and in other locations of the world.

We know that Ore usually stays in the condition of minerals. One and more than one mineral are staying together in the form of rock. Basically, it has to be extracted, refined and then sold. The Ore has to be extracted from minerals.

The scientific research got found that this type of Hematite was formed in the environment. They were found billions of years ago.

Scientific Hematite formula

 Fe2O3(s) + 3CO(g) → 2Fe(s) + 3CO2(g)

3CO starts taking oxygen and starts reacting with Fe2O3. After that, it becomes 3CO2 and 2Fe

{CO - Carbon Monoxide, Fe - Iron, Fe2O3 - Hematite/ Ferric Oxide, CO2 - Carbon Dioxide}

Where Hematite is used

Hematite is found in many locations around the world, but a few countries have most stocks of this element. Ores are produced in the country of Brazil, Russia, India, Ukraine, USA, South Africa, Canada, Venezuela, China and Australia.

It is used in paint, mouthwash, face cream, toys, Batteries, metal, herbicide, face wash, hair spray, auto paint, pigment, carpet, Furniture, binder, etc.

The reaction of Hematite with Acid

This test was performed; Hematite was added with the dissolution of Hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. No salt was added to this reaction.

Particulates were used in a reactor. The mixture was diluted. Examiners wanted to get a specious result. The whole reaction was controlled by a chemical process.

It has been observed that the leaching rate of hematite was seen in the first order with respect to hydrogen ion activity in the hydrochloric acid solution. (With or without the addition of common salt).

In the case of sulfuric acid; the rate was half order in the sulfuric acid solutions (With or without the addition of sodium sulfate).

An analysis showed that chloride ions were released from hydrochloric acid and sulfate ions from the sulfuric acid solution.

The reaction of Hematite with Water

Hematite can also occur without water presence. It collects layers in any form of water. Basically, in standing water, spring water and lake water.

Much hematite is magnetic, but the magnetic attraction is sickly. Much magnetic hematite is synthetic, which are sold as rocks and minerals. Hematite is heavy when compared with other similar-sized materials. The Molecular Weight of Hematite is "159.69"

Here are a brief discussion about Hematite mineral. Everyone needs to know about that. This is not involved in our daily life, but regarding a general knowledge everyone should know. If you have any question or more details about that, you can say in comment section.
