Top 8 Lord Shiva's temple in India.

Shankar, Umananda, Mahakal, Shambhu, Lord Shiva is worshiped under these different names. Here are some Lord Shiva's famous temples which are situated all over India.

 

 

1. Amarnath Temple

The Amarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva This temple is located in the pahalgam district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located about 136 km from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and about 13500 feet above sea level.

This is a natural cave. Shivling is made here inside the cave in a natural way every year in the snowfall. And in summer, the ice Shivling melts and becomes much smaller in size.

It is said that Bhrigu Muni was the first to have discovered Amarnath. Amarnath Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. It is said that Lord Shiva was telling Amar Katha to his wife Parvati inside this cave.

 

 

2. Markandeshwar Mahadev Temple

This temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Markandeshwar Mahadev Temple is located in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana in North India.

A river named Markanda flows by his side. It is said that the word Markandeshwar comes from a great devotee of Lord Shiva whose name is Maharishi.

 

 

3. Kandariya Mahadev Temple

The Kandariya Mahadev Temple is located in the Khajuraho of Madhya Pradesh in center of indIn. This temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva.

This temple is built by a Chandela ruler on 11th century. Kandariya Mahadev meaning " The Great God of the cave". This is very large and very tall temple. This stunning temple is around 31m tall.

 

 

4. Bhoramdeo Temple

Bhoramdeo Temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in the Chaura village of Chhatisgarh state of indIn. This temple is also known as the Khajuraho of Chhatisgarh.

The temples face is East. The length of the pavilion is 60 feet and the width is 40 feet.  This temple is built by Laxman Dev and Gopal Dev of Faninag vansh dynasty. 

Its construction is dated between the 7th and 12th centuries. There is a sculpted images of Ganga and Yamuna in front of the temple.

 

 

5. Negheriting Shiva Doul

Negheriting Shiva Doul temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in Dergaon of Assam, India. This is made by Kacharis during 8th-9th century AD. 

It's popular as Rhesus monkeys. It is said that the temple was built with stones that were located on the banks of the Dihing river. So, when the Dihing river changes it's course, the temple is destroyed.

Now, this place is known as Sheetal Negheri. In 1687 it was reconstructed by an Ahom king.

 

 

6. Unakoti Cave Temple

Unakoti Cave Temple is located in the Unakoti district of Indian state of Tripura, in South India. This temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva.

It is said that Lord Shiva once spent a night here. Every year in April a fair called Ashokastami is held here.

This temple is built in 600-700 AD. Unakoti means one less than a crore and it is said that these many rock cut carvings are available here situated at an altitude of 915m above sea level.

 

 

7. Hoysaleshwara Temple

Hoysaleshwara Temple is situated in Halebidu a town in the state of Karnataka, India. This is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is built by Hoysala empire in 12th century.

In Hoysala period of South indInd they built around 1,500 temples in 958 centres. Hoysaleshwara Temple is located about 150 km from Mysore.

The temple is named the king Vishnuvardhana Hoysaleshwara who built it. This temple is surrounded by ponds, mantapas and lakes.

 

 

8. Brihadeshwara Temple

Brihadeshwara Temple is located in Thanjavur of Tamil Nadu in South India. This temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva.

This temple is made by Raja Raja-I (Cholas) between 1003 and 1010 AD. It is also called Rajarajeswaram and " Great Living Chola Temples" The temple faces east.
