SPECIES IN NEWS

(1) NELLOPTODES GRETAE -->

Nelloptodes gretae is a species of beetle in the family Ptiliidae. It was described in October 2019 and named after the environmental activist Greta Thunberg. Its long antennae bear a passing resemblance to her braided pigtails.

 The beetle is pale yellow and gold and measures 0.79 millimeter long. It has no eyes or wings and is distinguishable by a small pit found between where the eyes should go. Usually found in the leaf litter and soil, they feed on fungal hyphae and spores.  

The newly described species was described from material originally collected in Kenya sometime between 1964 and 1965 by entomologist William C.Brock who took samples of soil from around east Africa which were stored in the Museum's collections. This species is one of nine within the newly erected genus Nelloptodes from samples.

  

(2)WHITE BELLBIRD (THE WORLD'S LOUDEST BIRD)-->

The white bellbird(procnias albus) is a species of bird in the family Cotingidae. The specific epithet is often spelled alba, but alba is correct due to the gender of genus. It is found in forests in the Guianas with small number in Venezuela and Brazilian state of Para.Only the male is white; the female is overall olive with yellowish streaks below and resembles other belbirds.

According to a study published in 2019,the white bellbird makes the loudest call ever recorded for birds, reaching 125 dB . The record was previously held by the screaming Piha with 116 dB.   

(3)GREAT INDIAN BUSTARD-->

The Great Indian Bustard(GIB) is one of the few species that the Government of india has included in its 'recovery programme for critically endangered species'

With less than 200 GIBs remaining in the world most of them found in Rajasthan's 'Desert National park'.

We are on the brink of forever losing a magestic bird species, which was once a strong contender to be declared as India's National Bird.

   

(4)TAMIL YEOMAN-->

Tamil Yeoman is among the 32 butterfly species found in the Western Ghats.Tamil Yeoman is orange in color with a dark brown outer ring.This butterfly species moves in groups in large numbers but only in a few places. It is also known as Tamil Maravan, which means warrior, these butterflies are found mainly in hilly areas. An expert team was involved in identifying butterfly species to be declared state butterfly.

  

(5)Glyptothorax gopii--> It is a fish.

(6)Garra simbalbaraensis-->It is a fish.
