Praries

The prairie is situated in North America . Prairie is situated between USA and Canada.

It's extent is about 6000 km from North to South, while the east and west extent is 2000 km. In Prairie the main occupation of the people is farming. They grow a large variety of crops,such as corn, wheats, barley and oats. Wheat is the most important crop. In winter they not do farming because the temperature falls below freezing point. The small grasses is covered by snow. This region have following advantage.

1. The rooling plains are well drained and suitable for mechanized large scale farming.

2. The dark brown soil is full of humus and other organic matter.

3. The utilization of these areas for farming began with the development of the farm machinery. This helped the prairie farmers to cultivate grain on a large scale.

Wheat farming in the prairie are very in the large variety about 1000 hectares. Agricultural easy work is done by the prairie farmers and the difficult work is done by the prairie robots and machines such as ploughing, seeding, harvesting, threshing, packing etc. The farms are generally divided into sections. Contour ploughing and strip cropping are widely practiced for reduce soil erosions. The farmers of the prairie produce much more than their needs. The prairie are also know as the Granary of the World due to surplus wheat production. Winnipeg in Canada is called the Gateway of the prairie. Before the arrival of the European, the prairie was the home of bisons called American buffalo. Due to indiscrminate hunting by European the bisons become extinct. The popular animal in prairie of Central USA is the prairie dog. The prairie is a treeless plain but near the river valley or where water is available the trees are grown such as poplar and williow trees.
