Manchester United hold up deal for target Bruno Fernandes as Sporting Lisbon raises fee

Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon remain a long way apart in the valuation of the Portugal international, with the asking price now increased.

The player has now been valued at £68m (€80m) and as a result, it is expected that discussions will be stretched into the coming week between the two clubs.

With injuries to the likes of Scot McTominay and Paul Pogba a well as the lack of consistency among other midfeild players, there is need to reineforce the midfield.

It was understood that United felt their lastest bid of £43m plus £17 in  potential add-ons reflects Fernandes' form, as the Sporting skipper has 13 goals in 21 games in all competitions this season.

Negotiations for the player will possibly continue this week, with United keen to sign Fernandes having indentified him as their primary target in the January transfer window. But the Old Trafford gaints are also interested in Leicester's James Maddison and Ajax's Donny van de Beek.

The Portugal international has a contract with Sporting until 2023 having signed a new deal in November, which has given the club a strong stand in these transfer negotiations.

Tottenham Hotspur were in the running for Fernandes signature last summer, but found the then asking price of more than £45m too high. They had since looked in the way of another Portuguese after signing Gedson Fernandes this week on an intial 18 months loan from Benfica.

Sporting Lisbon are reported unhappy with the way United are trying the structure the deal and branded unrealistic, with some of the proposed add-ons subjected to future success in the premier league and champions league.

Fernandes who played in Sporting's 2-nil defeat to Benfica on friday appeared to say goodbye to fans as he captained them.

Personal terms have been agreed with Manchester United and the 25 year old will earn around £120,000 with United's latest ofer including add-ons and incentives based on the performances of club and player should the deal go through.
