The match between the two giants one from england and the other from Spain took place in the Wanda Metropolitano.It was the same stadium in which Liverpool became the UCL champions last season.But this time the luck wasn't on their side and they would enter the second leg with one goal deficit.
Athletico came on the pitch with a perfect game plan,with 4-4-2 lineup the started really strongly and pressurized Liverpool from the start.Liverpool couldnt deal with the pressure and conceded the decisive goal in the 5th minute.Athletico won the corner and on the corner Saul Niguez scored.
After scoring athletico's only aim was to defend and how well the did it,stats says it all.Liverpool not even had a single shot on target.even though Liverpool enjoyed most of the possession i.e 77% but didn't find the net.Liverpool had chances but athletico defending was world class.Athletico's game plan worked and the walked out victorious.
Trent and Robertson were not at their best and were struggling with their crosses,and attackers were not able to convert .on the other hand Morata for Athletico had a golden chance but he slipped and the score remained 1-0. Morata then had another chance but Alison came to the rescue.Athletico defence was rock solid and they didn't gave easy balls and Liverpool through out the game struggled to hit the target even though the had most of the possession. Diego Simione on the side also encouraged his team and supported alot.He was appealing on every foul,the supporters also helped Athletico to give their hundred persent whereas Liverpool were fortunate that they conceded only one goal it could have gone more disastrous for them.
All eyes are now on the second leg in Anfield and everyone's hoping Liverpool would win.Athletico would be tested in Anfield and Liverpool have to give their best if they want to pass through Athletico Madrid.
