He helped his mother with the cooking and sang songs to the women of the house. At that time, even the mother would chase them away because the women were distracted by the vines.

Once Lata was practicing with her father's disciple Chandrakant Gokhale and Dinanath went out for some work. Five-year-old Lata was playing. Since there was no father, she went inside and told Gokhale that they were singing wrong. Lata then showed Gokhale singing properly. When the father returned, he sang to Lata again. Lata sang and ran away from there. "I learned to sing by listening, but I did not have the courage to sing in front of my father or with him," says Lata. "Then Lata and her sister Meena started learning music from Dinanath." Meanwhile, Lata's younger brother Hridaynath was four years old when his father died. Her father did not see his daughter becoming a singer, but he had an idea of Lata's success. He was also a good astrologer.
