How to Care Your Dog Top Tips - Keep Fido Clean and Fresh Smelling?

This article is about keeping your dog clean and dog care tips. Read these basic steps to keep him fresh smelling.

Coat Caring

First, brush your dog. Remove any loose dirt or debris from his coat. Untangle mats with a comb. Mats not removed at this stage will become impossible to remove afterward.

Moreover, if mats are left to dry they will pull tighter and cause unnecessary hurt to your dog. Mats also are known to trap moisture, which if left lying against your dog’s skin will cause skin irritation problems. You will need to either remove the mats with a comb or cut them out from your dog’s coat before bath time.

Ear Care

Softly place cotton balls in your dog’s ear to prevent the infiltration of water or shampoos into the ear canal.

Rubber Mat

Whether you decide to use a laundry tub or bathtub, it’s always safe to place a rubber mat in it to prevent your dog from slipping.

You can place a small box or platform to make it easy for your dog to enter the tub or you can gently lift him into the tub.

Be kind to your Fido

If your dog is scared of running water, use a spray hose or gently pour water from plastic containers to thoroughly soak his coat. Do not fill the tub.

Using a dog shampoo suited for your dog coats, preferably tearless, lather him up. Wash face area gently with a soft cloth. Please be careful not to let any shampoo trickle into your canine’s eyes.

Handle with Care

Remove shampoo by rinsing your dog’s coat thoroughly. Squeeze out as much water as possible from your dog’s coat and dry thoroughly with a towel. Remove cotton balls from ears.

Dry your dog. What method you use to dry your dog depends on his hair or coat type. Options: towel dry or blow-dry.

Letting your dog dry naturally could be a problem if he has long hair or a double coat. Such dogs’ hair will mat if left to dry naturally. Use a good portable hairdryer. Preferable those made specifically for pets. Human blow dryers tend to get too hot and can burn your dog's skin if you get too close, plus they do not have the ample power to sufficiently dry a dog.

Shorthaired or hairless dogs obviously won't mat, but still, need to be thoroughly dried so they don’t get cold. Older dogs, no matter what coat type, should be dried as thoroughly as possible and kept in a warm room for a couple of hours. If they get cold any arthritic conditions will be aggravated.

Besides keeping your dog clean and looking “in-tip-top shape”, grooming your dog regularly provides other great benefits. For example, your dog will become well adjusted to being handled and touched by others. Dog grooming care keeps shedding at a minimum. It also allows you an opportunity to inspect your dog’s eyes, ears, teeth, skin, and nails for any hidden ailments.
