Five Effective Teaching Skills

5 Effective Teaching Skills

Hello everyone. From the title of this article it is clear that here we're going to discuss about different teaching skills. But I think there should be a little introduction before starting discussion about all of these skills. So let's start......

According to my opinion to be a successful teacher teacher or more specifically a successful facilitator the most important quality to have is the willingness to facilitate children. To make a class effective and purposeful the subject knowledge of a teacher is not enough. Besides having subject knowledge a teacher should understand the psychology and the needs of his /her students. The teacher should use proper teaching techniques, proper LTMs (Learning Teaching Materials) etc. to make the topic more interesting and easy to understand. For conducting a class efficiently a teacher has to acquire different teaching skills. These are as follows........

1. Skill of integrating knowledge and experience : In this skill a teacher mainly integrates similar topics of different subjects so that students can inter-relate all those topics and can form a concrete idea. They can also relate those topics with their real life. Different components of this skill are --------

  • Students integrate that particular subject with other subjects
  • Teacher elicits examples /instances from students
  • Teacher accepts evidences or samples given by pupils
  • Students will generalise what they'll find from the integration.

 2. Skill of facilitating child centric learning : In this skill children play the main role /key role.  Active participation of children is the key feature of this skill. Teacher acts as their friend, philosopher and guide. Different components of this skill are --------

  • Active participation by the students in the classroom activities
  • Maintaining the relevance students express their opinions
  • Interactions among the students in the classroom
  • Decisions taken by students.

3. Skill of encouraging learners to enquire :

This skill of teaching encourages learners to ask relevant questions to get clear concept of the topic. For this teacher should maintain a friendly relation with his /her students so that they can ask questions fearlessly. It requires a democratic classroom environment and a teacher giving importance to his /her student's enquiries. Various components of this skill are ----------

  • Learners ask questions to the teacher in the classroom during the transaction of the lesson
  • Flexibility in framing the question
  • Sense of adequacy and preciseness of the question
  • Question must be related to the topic of discussion in the classroom.

4. Skill of developing observation in learners : This skill aims to represent the topic in such a way and to provide such activities to learners which'll definitely enhance their power of observation. Different components of this skill are -----

  • Students observe something
  • Observing again according to the need of the lesson
  • Students find out ' cause and effect' relationship out of their observation
  • Students reflect after observation.

5. Skill of integrating performing art with the learning situation : This skill focuses on enhancing creativity among students. It makes the lesson more interesting by dramatizing the topic which also helps students to remember the concept more easily. Different components of this skill are ------------

  • Students take active part in different topics of discussion in the classroom
  • Students must create something new (i.e.Write creatively)
  • Students act out the scripted dialogue in drama form or in the form of role play
  • Students reflect upon the topic.

From the above discussion we can say each skill ensures the active participation of the students and the involvement of the maximum number of sense organs thus making the teaching learning process more effective. So to be a successful teacher or facilitator one must have to acquire as well as implement all of these teaching skill.
