Chandrayaan as it is clear with its name the mission to the Moon. It was the second mission organized by ISRO after chandrayaan 1.
It was a highly complex mission which represents a significant technological leap compared to the other missions of ISRO. Chandryaan consisted of an orbiter ,rover and a lander with the goal of exploring the South Pole of the Moon.
This was a unique mission which aimed at studying not just one area but to study the entire area including the areas of combination of exosphere . The South Pole is especially interesting because of the lunar surface area that remains in shadow is much larger than the North pole. This could be due to the presence of water, south poles has craters that are cold traps and consist a fossil record of the early solar system.
Radio transmission from the lander were tracked during descent by anyslst using a 25 meter radio telescope owned by the Netherlands Institute of Radio astronomy. The powered descent was also observed by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance orbiter using its Lyman Alpha mapping project . The orbiter was reported to have imaged the location of the lander . Unconfirmed reports citing an ISRO official stated that the lander was intact but nothing was said about the actual location of the lander. Both NASA and ISRO tried their best for contacting the lander but no further information was received. The LRO will perform the third flyover on November 10 . The orbiter part of mission with eight scientific instruments remains operational, and will continue its seven year mission to study the moon.
If this mission would have been 100% successful it would definitely be great for the future exploration but due to some technical issues Vikaram lander lost contact and ruined the hopes the world, and leaving tears in eyes of every individual.
